Tips for Your First (and Every) Mammogram

At the deNicola Breast Health Center, we understand that your first mammogram can be a daunting experience. Our goal is to make this process as comfortable as possible. As a fully accredited Breast Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, we provide the highest standard of care in breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and mammography. We care about you and strive to provide patient-centered care.

What to expect

A certified mammogram technologist will take you to a private room containing a mammography machine. This is a specialized X-ray device specifically designed for breast imaging. It limits X-ray exposure to only the breast and uses a device to hold and compress it, allowing us to capture images from various angles. The compression might feel uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few seconds for each image. The entire procedure typically takes about 20 minutes.

Tips to ensure your first mammogram experience is smooth and stress-free

Before you arrive:

  • Try to schedule your mammogram for the week after your menstrual period when your breasts are less likely to be tender. Early morning /evening appointments can help you avoid waiting times.

  • Reduce caffeine intake a few days before your mammogram, as it can make your breasts more tender.

  • Take a shower before your appointment, but avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants, lotions, or powders on your breasts and underarms on the day of the mammogram. These can show up on the mammogram images and interfere with the results.

  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen an hour before the appointment can help.

  • When you arrive, we will provide a johnny (robe) to wear on top. Wear a two-piece outfit so you can easily remove your shirt. Leave necklaces and other jewelry at home to avoid the need to remove them.

During your mammogram:

  • Communicate with the technologist if you have any concerns, pain, or breast implants. Don’t hesitate to ask the technologist or your doctor any questions you may have about the procedure.

  • Try to stay relaxed during the X-ray. Tension can make the process more uncomfortable. The technologist will position your breast on the machine and apply compression. This can be uncomfortable but is necessary for clear images. Stay as still as possible to ensure the images are not blurred.

After your mammogram:

  • Ask when you can expect the results and how you will receive them.

  • If you receive a callback for additional images, don't panic. This is because we need more information and does not necessarily mean there is a problem.

Regular mammograms are essential for early detection of breast cancer. Following these tips can help make the experience more manageable and less stressful. At the deNicola Breast Health Center, we are committed to providing you with the best care possible, ensuring your peace of mind every step of the way.
