What to Expect When Labor Is Induced
At The Birth Place at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, we know every pregnancy is different. Sometimes, labor needs a little help getting started. This is called labor induction, and it’s a safe and common way to help your baby arrive when needed.
Why is labor induced?
There are a few reasons your provider may recommend induction:
- You’re past your due date.
- You have a medical condition like high blood pressure or diabetes.
- Your water has broken, but contractions haven’t started.
How is labor induced?
There are a few ways we can help start labor. Your induction will be tailored to best meet the needs of your body and the baby’s needs.
- Medication: A medicine called Pitocin is given through an IV to help start contractions.
- Cervical ripening: Cervical ripening is the process in which medication is given, by mouth or vaginally, to help soften the muscle of the cervix. Along with medication, a “balloon” may be used to help start the dilation process.
- Breaking your water: Your provider may consider breaking your water to encourage contractions and help labor progress.
What to expect when labor is induced
Induction can take a few hours or even a day or two, depending on how your body responds. You’ll be monitored closely to make sure you and your baby are safe. Some women feel strong contractions right away, while others need more time for labor to progress.
Both natural and medicated pain relief options are available after induction. Your team will provide suggestions such as hydrotherapy, position changes, and massage along with medical options such as nitrous oxide, IV pain medication, or an epidural. Our team will be with you every step of the way to keep you comfortable and answer any questions.
Once labor begins, the rest of the process is like natural childbirth. You’ll continue to be monitored and supported in your labor process till the birth of your baby. Most inductions lead to vaginal delivery.
At The Birth Place, our goal is a safe and healthy delivery for you and your baby. If you have questions about labor induction, talk to your provider. We’re here to help you feel confident and prepared for your big day!
