Tips and Suggestions
Consider breastfeeding. It's a wonderful gift for you and your baby. Here are some helpful suggestions.
- Skin-to-skin contact is important for all babies and mothers. The CDC and World Health Organization recommend holding your baby skin-to-skin for 30 minutes shortly after birth. There are many benefits. Babies stay warmer, cry less and feed better. Mothers relax and feel calm. Skin-to-skin contact helps create connection and comfort.
- Hand Expression of breastmilk, without using a pump, is a helpful skill to practice after birth. Watch this video and see this handout for instructions.
- Good latch creates comfort for you and your baby. Watch this video for an example of a good latch. If latching is not comfortable, ask us for help.

The Three Golden Rules About Breastfeeding
In the beginning days:
- Babies feed 8 or more times each day
- Babies have yellow golden mustard like bowel movements by 5 - 7 days of life
- Mothers are comfortable with breastfeeding
