Profile
Sarah Himmelstein, M.D., a board-certified general surgeon, earned a Doctor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, and a B.S. in science, life science option, at The Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA. She completed a general surgery residency at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, DE.
“What I really like about general surgery is that I get to work with my hands to fix problems,” she says. “And a patient can go back to living their life and we’ve made it better.”
Dr. Himmelstein says it’s particularly gratifying that every day presents new challenges.
“General surgery gives me the opportunity to do a lot of different things and to sometimes get creative to solve a problem because not every hernia or gallbladder is the same, just like not every person is the same,” she says. “I like the instant gratification. I remove the gallbladder, it’s gone and I don’t have to treat it with medicine. That part is fixed.”
As a general surgeon, Dr. Himmelstein specializes in minimally invasive surgery, hernia repairs, minor procedures, wound care and performing screening colonoscopies.
When she’s not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, reading, skiing and hiking.
