Cold & Flu Season Preparation: Your Ultimate Checklist

As an emergency physician working in Immediate Care, I often see people come in during the peak of cold and flu season, looking for relief and advice. While some illnesses need professional care, many can be managed at home if you’re prepared. To do so, it helps if you have a well-stocked kit. Here’s a checklist of things I recommend keeping on hand to be prepared for cold and flu season.

When to Visit Immediate Care for Flu Symptoms

Knowing when to seek immediate care is important, especially when symptoms become severe or unusual. Here’s when it’s time to visit immediate care for the flu:

  • High Fever: If a fever exceeds 102°F and isn’t improving with medication.
  • Difficulty Breathing: Shortness of breath or wheezing could be signs of complications.
  • Severe Dehydration: If fluids aren’t staying down or signs of dehydration appear (e.g., dark urine, dry mouth, or dizziness).
  • Persistent Vomiting: Vomiting that won’t stop or is accompanied by severe stomach pain needs medical attention.
  • Prolonged Symptoms: If symptoms persist beyond a week or worsen, it’s best to get checked.

Stay Prepared for Cold and Flu Season

With the right preparation, many cold and flu symptoms can be managed at home, reducing the need for immediate care visits. However, when symptoms become severe, seeking professional help is crucial.
